All the talk of building monitoring (Bridge the gap, AJ 25.04.13) is a step in the right direction, but it adds credence to the false idea that operational energy is the all-important factor. Tom Woolley points out that the common misconception of embodied energy as a horizontal line on a graph of energy vs time, that is then cancelled by an operational line when the two cross (as set out by Sustainable Homes in 1999), has been demolished by research carried out at Finland's Aalto University and the 'carbon spike problem'.
