The earliest buildings on the University of Kent's Canterbury campus were designed in the 1960s by William Holford in a handsome brown brick and concrete. But the campus is now dominated by later buildings in concrete blockwork of all types and colours. We initially wanted a brick building, linking visually to the earliest buildings on campus, but the planners insisted that we follow the blockwork vernacular, so we proposed a purpose-made block with a pebble and flint face incorporating granite chippings, which has warmth, character and texture.
