The Kench John Young and Meloy Architects

The families of John Young and Charles Meloy have enjoyed a long history with the Kench, a small tidal inlet off Langstone Harbour enclosed by a spit of land at the west end of Hayling Island. Working within the constraints of residents' association rules that stipulate a maximum permissible area of 70m~2, the status of the Kench as a nature reserve and the site's flood risk designation, we created a structure that 'floats' above ground level with ramp access to an external deck.
