THE SPACE PROJECT, MANCHESTER PRP ARCHITECTS LLP

The Space Project is a £10.4 million refurbishment of a 1970s industrial building, formerly a manufacturing hall, and support spaces for ICL and Fujitsu. Work has created five, 1,115m~2 film production stages, designed to deliver excellent acoustic soundproofing. The stages are supported by workshops, a catering facility and flexible support space comprising: production offices; dressing rooms; make-up, hair and wardrobe; and rehearsal rooms. The existing building was stripped back to the principal superstructure - left 'raw' for reasons of aesthetics and affordability -and clad to allow it and the new extension to be read as one cohesive form. New work has been detailed to enhance the contrast with retained elements. The building adopts an industrial aesthetic, softened by bespoke furniture and dramatic coloured elements employed in discreet locations to aid wayfinding. Alistair Weir, director, PRP Architects LLP.
