Acoustics play a critical role in the function of some buildings - particularly those used for music and speech - and contribute to the sense of wellbeing in all building types. For this reason it is best to work with qualified acousticians who are members of the Institute of Acoustics and the Association of Noise Consultants - and best to involve them at the concept stage of the design process. There are many design guides, standards and statutory requirements that should be applied as a minimum. These include BB93 for schools, HTM 08-01 for healthcare, and guides for office spaces from the British Council for Offices and FIS. Credit scoring schemes such as BREEAM should also be taken into consideration.
