No to violence

In September 1977 a woman was beaten to death by her husband of only three months. When he turned himself in to the police, the husband claimed he didn't think she would die as she was supposedly used to the beating. This event stirred Ruth Rasnic, a renowned Israeli feminist and activist, to found No To Violence, an organisation that set out to provide for battered women one of humankind's fundamental needs: a safe home. Today, when the World Health Organization estimates that almost a third (30 per cent) of women have experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner, No To Violence's mission seems as important as ever. Forty years after its inception as a charity with one room, Rasnic inaugurated in Tel Aviv the first purpose-built shelter for abused women.
