Asif Khan Architects and David Adjaye have won National Museums Liverpool's placemaking competition for a 'transformational' rethink of the city's Canning Dock area, between Royal Albert Dock and Mann Island. The winning team also includes Nigerian architect Mariam Kamara and Theaster Gates, who is designing next year's Serpentine Pavilion. The site includes the Canning Graving Docks, once used to fit out, clean and repair ships working the transatlantic slave trade routes, central to Liverpool's economy at the time. Kamara said the project, which includes public realm works and a new footbridge, was a chance to 'explore the power of architecture as a storytelling tool'.
