Circular economy in practice

What was the background to setting up Rotor? When the three of us founded it about 15 years ago-Lionel Devlieger, Lionel Billiet and myself -we'd been talking about how the circular economy was a concept that wasn't acknowledged much in architectural sustainability at the time. Sustainability was seen mostly as a question of how much insulation you put in facades, or how many layers of glass in windows-the focus was on energy efficiency. It was totally absurd, focusing only on energy consumption levels after the delivery of the building, when the energy used in making it was not even looked at. It was also largely ignored in published architecture and academic theory up to that point. So we asked ourselves: 'how can we work in this area?'
