THE RICH TRADITIONAL COSTUMES OF GARO TRIBE OF MEGHALAYA

The traditional costumes of Garo tribe are unique and very beautiful. Status of traditional textiles acts as craft in the community. Attire is perhaps the most susceptible to change among all socio- cultural trait. The continuity and cotemporary character are importance of the traditional textiles traditions among Garo community of Meghalaya. Western concept ofrndressing has entered the realms of costumes design in Meghalaya. However, the elements of tradition are much alive in the costumes- design of the women of Meghalaya. Meghalaya has rich cultural heritage which needs to be preserved and this can be affected by telling, retelling and reminding the younger generations about it. Culture is the root of the people and those people who ere unmindful of their own culture and cultural heritage and get themselves carried away by alien cultures are lost people in a sense and the modern generation needs to learn much from the culture and practices of their forefathers and mothers.
