Cotton body seeks holistic policy on fibre

A holistic policy to control volatility in the price of cotton for assessing the domestic requirement of the fibre and an export policy to ensure that spinners do not suffer is crucial for the country, J Thulasidharan, President, Indian Cotton Federation said. Emphasising the need for a policy that would encompass the entire textile value chain, he said, "ever since the removal of cotton from the Essential Commodities Act in 2007, exports became totally free. The domestic industry has since then resorted to import to meet its requirement as Indian cotton either turned out to be more expensive than die imported fibre or quality cotton - in short supply in the domestic market."
