Lisa Monnas, Merchants, Princes and Painters: Silk Fabrics in Italian and Northern Painting 1300-1550

Richly dyed and intricately patterned silk textiles including cloth of gold, tissue, figured velvet, damask and satin played a significant part in the lives of the social, artistic and mercantile elite of medieval and early modern Europe. The financial and cultural worth of these fabrics is made very clear in the purchases made by Neri di Bicci between December 1453 and January 1461 or the textile gifts given to Albrecht Duerer from July 1520 to July in the following year.
