Developments in the European manmade fibre industry in the past year have been heavily influenced by an unfavourable economic background. European economic growth has been disappointing, with GDP in the Euro area up by just 1.7% in 2005 and most economists expecting only slightly better results in 2006 and 2007. Growth rates are higher in the new member states and in Turkey, but this is far from enough to compensate for the poor results from the heart of Europe. Unemployment is high, which depresses consumer confidence and expenditure, and governments are failing in most cases to carry out with sufficient determination the economic, social and fiscal changes needed to increase the flexibility and dynamism of the European economies.
