AT&T, Inc.'s revised deal with Apple, Inc., for the second-generation iPhone aim's to substantially increase demand for wireless data services by slashing the up-front cost despite adding new features, such as access to AT&T's 3G data network and to new applications from outside developers. While AT&T is betting that increased data revenues will more than offset its investment in subsidizing the devices, other wireless operators hope to ride the rising wave of interest in mobile data services fueled by rampant iPhone hype.
