It is with deep sorrow that we must announce that our colleague, former editor and friend, George Bugliarello, has passed away. George was a visionary who believed in change and a leader who went about making change possible. He served as the eighth president of Polytech Institute of New York and was the elected Foreign Secretary of the United States National Academy of Engineering. George was not only beloved as a scholar and a highly internationally acclaimed engineer, but he also served on many corporate and foundation boards and national and international advisory groups. He was awarded eight honorary degrees from prestigious universities. He never lost his enthusiasm for new ideas and challenged us all to think. Many of George's global colleagues have commented on his contribution to the academy and industry. Lord Alec Broers, former vice chancellor of Cambridge University, stated, "He was very much a voice of the Academy to the Foreign Associates and we will miss him greatly". Charles Vest, president of the National Academy of Engineering and president emeritus of MIT, commented that George's "wise insights as a member of the Council, his accomplishments as a leader of engineering education, and his dedication to building networks among engineers throughout the world was an inspiration to us all." Certainly, at Technology in Society, we will miss George tremendously. He would want us to continue to embrace new ideas and he would challenge us all to think deeply about technology and the world around us.
