Technology: AMD makes processors based on the x86 instruction set; they are primarily used in laptop computers, desktop computers, and servers. In 2006, it acquired ATI, a maker of graphics chips and expansion cards, and since then, it has also made graphics processors for personal computers and games consoles, including the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft's XBox 360. Market: In 2009, AMD had 20 percent of the $28.6 billion market for global PC processor shipments. AMD graphics processors are used in more than half of all notebooks that rely on discrete graphics cards for gaming and other multimedia-heavy applications.
