Voices in the Museum

Museum visitors hear many voices. The artifacts themselves speak with the greatest clarity clarity and authority, carrying the burden of the exhibit. A curator ial voice emerges form labels, story lines, and even the selection of artifacts. The museum itself gives voice to its history and purpose. Sometimes voices from the street intrude upon the visitor's experience. All these voices rever- berated through the exhibit of the Enola Gay, producing a tower of Babel. The national Air and Space Museum (NASM), reportedly the most vis- ited museum in the world, intrudes on the visitor's communion with the artifacts.
