What, then, can be learned from The Industrialists? Hagemann's choice of Kroyer, the most highly paid painter of his time, reveals both his artistic tastes and a tendency toward self-aggrandizement. The painting itself reveals a variety of hitherto unsuspected connections among Danish industrialists at the turn of the century. During his lifetime, Hagemann was a central fig- ure in several industrial networks and occupied a peripheral position in sev- eral others. The Industrialists shows few of these networks in full.
