Environmental history should seek to draw more insights from the history of technology. Perhaps one of those insights might be that technology does more than intervene in the social metabolism that regulates the human relationship with nature. Indeed, the very idea of technological innovation and the tendency internal to capitalist dynamics to constantly search for technological advantages creates the desire to see in technology itself an infinite capacity for variation.
