There has been a long-standing belief among policymakers in the United States that with the success of the Manhattan Project came a hegemony in the field of atomic weapons, especially with respect to uranium enrichment. While the physicists involved in the project had warned that "nuclear bombs cannot possibly remain a 'secret weapon' at the exclusive disposal of this country for more than a few years," the obviously vast scale of the Manhattan Project seemed too enormous for other nations to take on, especially when it came to uranium enrichment.
