摘要

As universities and other academic institutions implement institutional repositories (IRs), they must remain sensitive to the needs of their constituencies, especially the faculty and students who are constantly creating new knowledge. Scholarly communication is moving online at an increasing pace, and the technology that enables digital publishing has accelerated faster than our ability to meet the legal requirements of copyright. Rights management systems provide potential solutions to the complexities of copyright and access management. This was the theme for the program "Digital Rights Management and Institutional Repositories: Achieving Balance in a Complex Environment" at ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. Developed by the Network Resources and Metadata Interest Group of ALCTS and cosponsored by the Digital Libraries Interest Group of LITA, the program provided a forum for discussing trends in DRM and its applications in institutional repositories.
