SWS Business Treasurer's Report: 2003-2004 Budgets

The financial status of the Society of Wetland Scientists has undergone some significant changes in the past few years, and is presently in what can be termed a 'state of concern'. In this report, I summarize our current situation, steps taken to date, and strategies that can be used to deal with this situation. Current Status: The Society has two types of accounts-those used for Operations and those where Endowment Funds are kept (Table 1). The funds for day to day operations of the Society are kept in an interest-bearing checking account. The second portion of the operation funds, the reserve accounts, is kept readily available for unexpected expenses or to support the Society through deficit situations. These accounts earn interest at a higher rate than the account used for daily business, and can also be used when start-up money is needed for a new activity or initiative. The Endowment Funds are restricted to expenditures associated with specific Society activities, such as the Awards Program and support for graduate students conducting research in wetland related disciplines. While the Society currently has considerable assets, the budget details listed in Table 2 outline the reason for our present concern.
