Bergamo: Nuovo Centro della Grande Bergamo/New Center of Greater Bergamo

The Progetto Urbano per Porta Sud, launched in 2006 on a million square meters of abandoned city close to the part of Bergamo laid out by Piacentini, reflects the desire to shape the New Center of Greater Bergamo by exploiting the advantages of interconnecting the system of local, national and continental transport. The central theme of configuring an intermodal junction and the evident relations with the rapidly expanding Milan/Orio al Serio airport have suggested that the project should look at this area "from the territory" and no longer solely "from the city." The idea of reformulating a New Center capable of taking advantage of a condition of high regional and continental accessibility makes it possible of think of new uses, new forms of habitability and new intensities of relationship, which can be complementary and synergic with the existing city. The recourse to the Coordinated Urban Project has permitted realization of the project as a process, with the aim of giving form and certainties of implementation to this piece of city to be created over a span of time that will exceed a decade. Under these circumstances, a form of "direction of planning" to be set in motion concomitantly with the conventional procedure of approval becomes an indispensable condition for governing an activity that may see multiple planning contributions over time.
