During the 1990s international experts realized that there was a need to upgrade the traditional concept for service life design of concrete structures. Accepting the statistical spread for all influencing factors for deterioration, this community of enthusiasts wished to introduce a probability-based approach both for the performance criteria and the design itself. The goal was to establish an analytical and transparent methodology as close as possible to that used in traditional structural design. At an international workshop in Troms0, Norway in 2001, experts from Europe together with colleagues from overseas settled on a strategy for implementing such technology in operative standards. The group concluded that fib would be the appropriate body for developing a model for such standardization. This strategy was endorsed by ISO and CEN. In April of this year fib published the result of this work, its bulletin number 34 "Model Code for Service Life Design" (see page 88).
