Preparing for Carbon Dioxide Controls

People often ask me for my opinion on various controversial but scientifically based issues. Examples in the past have included RCRA hazardous wastes, CFCs, global warming, and so on. My response has always been "it is not my job to make these decisions; it is my job to help my clients meet regulations that might result as the scientists and politicians make these decisions." I try to be at the forefront so my clients respond more quickly, accurately, and economically. I believe it's time I started preparing my clients for carbon dioxide emission controls (global warming). There have been reports published recently that state undeniably that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing and has been for quite some time. Many, if not most, scientists believe that this increase in CO_2 will or is leading to global warming and some potentially disastrous results. Most, if not all, of the rest of the developed world believe it is already a problem and have started making changes as a result. The US stands alone in our reluctance to make things happen. Whether I think this is real or not is unimportant; enough has happened to make me think we will be doing CO_2 emission reporting and controlling in the future. Let's help prepare our clients (companies) to do the best job of responding. This issue, I will discuss some thoughts that are economical and hopefully effective. In other words, these ideas don't cost much and could prove to be valuable.
