The Soviet Union selected their first five female cosmonauts, training and preparing them for space flight in little over a year (see part one of 'First woman in space', Spaceflight, January 2006). After considering various flight options, one of the women, Jr Lt Valentina Tereshkova was assigned to the Vostok 6 mission, part of a dual flight with Vostok 5.
