Skyport Files Chapter 11 As Intelsat Halts Credit

Teleport operator Skyport Global Communications Inc. has filed for bankruptcy protection in U.S. District Court in Houston, halting collection of $1.2 million it owes to Intelsat USA under a contract Skyport officials say has continued to be an "albatross" since another bankruptcy filing in 2005.rnSkyport Global, founded in 1999, leases bandwidth from satellite operators and resells voice, Internet, fax and other services to emergency management agencies, the oil industry and other national and international clients.rnThe company experienced a spike in business from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. National Guard after Hurricane Ike hit the Texas coast in September, just as Intelsat cut off credit it had been extending to Skyport Global, according to the bankruptcy filing. That prompted Chief Executive Patrick Brant to request and then receive approval from Skyport Global's board of directors to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
