Nasa has contracted to pay Ball Aerospace & Technologies of Boulder, Colo., up to $9.7 million to assess and possibly refurbish the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE 3) instrument.rnThe instrument, which measures gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere, was built to fly aboard the international space station. That plan was scrapped, however, following the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The instrument has been in storage at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., since Tanuary 2004.
