"Greetings from Leipzig! Yet again, a wonderful ICSE has come to pass. With over 1000 attendees, there are colleagues to talk to everywhere, and just not enough time to talk to them all in five days. This ICSE is special because it is taking place in the former East Germany. You can see the development everywhere, including the gorgeous conference center we're occupying on the edge of town. The other thing that makes Leipzig special is its place in music history. Bach spent much of his life here, and Wagner was born here. Music is everywhere. Every (gorgeous) church seems to have regular choral and organ concerts, and every musician - popular or classical - seems to stop here on tour. On Thursday night we attended a wonderful concert at the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, performed by the legendary Gewandhaus Orchestra, led by John Mauceri. We heard music from a wide range of composers, including Philip Glass, Ravel, John Williams, and Ligeti. The arrangements were stunning, the performances full of emotion, and the sound in the concert hall was sublime. It was by far the best conference event that I have ever attended, a high bar to clear.
