Coking coal miner Contura cautiously optimistic on seaborne market

Contura Energy Inc., which is seeking to finalize a merger with Alpha Natural Resources Inc. to become the biggest U.S. met coal producer, expects production and sales to meet growing demand for U.S. coking coal overseas. With seaborne prices trending close to multiyear average highs and domestic business being booked at higher contract levels for 2019, U.S. miners are yet to spoil the party by producing too much. Contura is a mining trading group and believes the U.S. met coal industry has recovered through discipline, which has conversely limited coals available for blending and trading.
