Ayalon Institute

Israel's fight for independence after the Sec-ond World War is filled with spectacular and courageous exploits and daring moves in order to thwart both the British government in Palestine and the resulting Arab advances. One such story is that of the "Ayalon Institute" on Kibbutz Hill outside of the town of Rehovot, south of Tel Aviv. It was here that for several years after the war, several million rounds of 9x19mm ammunition were produced for the Haganah under the supervision of Ta'as. At first glance, this Slovenian 91mm pis-tol looked like other mainstream designs. The FIME Group offered me a long-slide competi-tion pistol, the REX Alpha, and I agreed out of pure politeness. I am not a competition shoot-er, but I was hooked from the first magazine! The pistol shot with ridiculous accuracy, slow rate or fast, and recoil wasn't worth mention-ing. At 39 ounces empty, the all-steel REX Al-pha weighs the same as an M1911, so the low re-coil was to be expected. What I did not expect was its aluminum-framed, carry-oriented sib-ling, REX Zero 1 Tactical, to have practically the same performance and overall feel. Both guns have ambidextrous magazine release buttons and safety levers. With only a slightly shorter 4.3-inch barrel, Zero 1 weighs a full 10 ounces less, feeling handier to me. I am sure that the Alpha would win on split times, but the Zero 1 felt more practical. With a full 17-round mag-azine, it was no heavier than Alpha was empty.
