Laws and Lithographs: Seeing Imperial Russia Through Illustrations of Civil Uniforms in Polnoe sobranie zakonov Rossiiskoi Imperii

摘要

This article discusses illustrations in Polnoe sobranie zakonov Rossiiskoi Imperii (PSZ) [Complete collection of the laws of the Russian Empire]. Executed in St. Petersburg 1830-1916, PSZ is a multi-volume monument of the imperial Russian legal system and contains over 2,000 lithographs of uniforms, flags, and other paraphernalia. Inherently technical, the images and particularly those of uniforms convey the normative regulations issued by the Russian administrative apparatus.
