The number of U.S. and allied ships equipped with the Aegis ballistic missile defense (BMD) weapon system is scheduled to grow through a major initiative funded by the U.S. Defense Department's Missile Defense Agency (MDA). Valued at $1 billion, the contract awarded to the Lockheed Martin Corporation will increase the number of BMD-capable ships by integrating Aegis BMD into the ongoing Aegis modernization program.
