Industry Government Team To Keep Internet Shopping Safe and Fast

Aconsortium of Internet support and financial services companies are collaborating to enhance smart card technology by incorporating new elliptic curve cryptography, or ECC. This technology promises dramatic improvements in the efficiency and security of on-line commerce. The Department of the Treasury's Bureau of Printing and Engraving (BEP) and the Financial Management Service (FMS) demonstrated the technology, and last fall, BEP began accepting credit-card payments for Internet purchases of its currency products.
