A Broken Metaphor in Java

摘要

In this paper, the matrix of metaphors in which Java is located is outlined, and the way that students understand event-handling through the EvcntListcner metaphor is described, supported by interview extracts. This clashes both with the typical syntax of natural language imperatives, and with the actual mechanism of Java event-handling. It is therefore a source of some confusion in students.
