Cost Effective Shoreline Monitoring in a Small California Coastal Community: The San Clemente Experience

The city of San Clemente Beach Monitoring Program was established in Fall 2001, with the general objective of documenting changes in the shorezone along an 11 -mile stretch of coast bounded by Dana Point Harbor and San Mateo Point, located in Orange County, CA. The results are intended to provide a basis for evaluating the impacts of both natural events and potential beach replenishment operations. A key consideration in developing the program was to acquire the necessary data in a cost effective manner that will be sustainable over the long term. Although the program is entering only its third year, the initial results already are being used to support a number of coastal projects.
