Impacts of the 2004 Hurricane Season on Brevard County, Florida's Beaches

During the six-week period from Aug. 13 through Sept. 26, 2004, Brevard County's shoreline was impacted by a strong northeast storm and three hurricanes named Charley, Frances, and Jeanne. Associated wave energies far exceeded a 50-year storm event. Wind damage and coastal erosion were widespread, but damage to coastal structures from erosion and undermining was dramatically different along the nourished beaches of the Brevard County Federal Shore Protection Project compared to the adjacent non-nourished shorelines. The beach nourishment project provided protection from storm surge and ocean waves to oceanfront parks, businesses, homes and the barrier island emergency evacuation route. Before the 2005 hurricane season, emergency recovery projects replaced 1.25 million cubic yards of offshore sand on 11 miles of beach and stabilized an additional 21 miles of dune with 550,000 cubic yards of upland beach-quality fill.
