Hurricane Ivan Storm Impacts on Panama City Beach, Florida

This paper describes the 2004 storm losses experienced along the Panama City Beach, FL, shoreline within the 1998-99 beach nourishment project area. The total beach volume losses within the project area were similar to the 1995 Hurricane Opal losses. Hurricane Ivan caused a loss of approximately 2.5 million cubic yards of sand from the active project profile, which was more than expected given its distance from the storm track. For the Panama City Beach community, the 1999 beach nourishment project proved invaluable, significantly reducing the amount of damage to upland structures on this beach.
