Urban Beach: A Series on Coastal Cities That Have Successfully Made the Waterfront Accessible to Their Citizens

A beach is a magical place. For millennia, humans have sought out this dynamic boundary of land, water, and air. It is a place that invites contemplation - both inward and outward. As Herman Melville once said, "Meditation and water are wedded forever." Urban coastal parks help define a city, and immeasurably contribute to the quality of life to be had by its citizenry. An important component of the successful expansion or revitalization of a coastal city is the well-planned development, management and preservation of its coastal resources. By celebrating examples of successful urban beaches, this series of forthcoming Shore & Beach papers can be used as inspiration for a city and its citizens who want to improve their most precious natural resource: the urban beach.
