The University of North Carolina (UNC)'s Coastal Studies Institute, in partnership with Resolute Marine Energy, Jennette's Pier, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, recently completed a series of field model tests of a surge based wave energy conversion (WEC) device. This device is designed to generate electricity by using wave orbital velocities to actuate a paddle, which pivots on an axis along its lower edge, supported by a pair of rotary hydraulic pumps that capture energy from the oscillating motion induced by passing waves.
