At the end of World War One French shipyards were unable to cope with the rebuilding of the French merchant fleet which had been badly depleted during the four years of conflict and as a result, four passenger ships were ordered for Compagnie Generate Transatlantique (French Line) from British yards. Two were built at Birkenhead by Cammell Laird, and although given consecutive yard numbers, one of these ships, De Grasse, took four years to complete.
