She has been a long time coming but the first of the Royal Navy's new amphibious assault ships has been well worth the wait. HMS Albion represents a quantum leap forward in capability over her venerable predecessors Fearless and Intrepid and, with her sister ship Bulwark, will provide Britain's forces with the means to mount amphibious operations for many years to come. The origins of the new ships can be traced to the Defence Review of 1981 when Defence Secretary John Nott earmarked the new ships predecessors Fearless and Intrepid for disposal, although neither vessel was, at the time, more than 16 years old. The invasion of the Falkland Islands by Argentina in April 1982 resulted in the decision to retire the two ships being suspended, although Intrepid had already paid off and was being de-stored ready for disposal. However, she and Fearless were hurriedly prepared for service and sailed for the South Atlantic where they played a leading role in the amphibious operation to retake the islands.
