R.A. Stone describes a selection of local vantage points from which to photograph ships visting the busy Cornish port of Falmouth. The object of this article is to give some guidance to those ship lovers who travel to Falmouth to photograph vessels arriving and departing this busy Cornish port. Local maps of Falmouth and its environs show what appear to be many suitable sites for ship photography, but in reality these seldom live up to their promise. Ships always look their best in sunlight and, as most have dark coloured hulls, the angle of the sun is of great importance to good ship photography. If photographed against the light, ships appear only as silhouettes and the resultant images lack detail and contrast. It is therefore important to note that the sites listed here all depend on the position of the sun to give the best results.
