In dense fog just before dawn on 11 May 1972, the British cargo liner Royston Grange was engulfed in a deadly fire storm when she was in collision with the Liberian-flagged tanker Tien Chee. Both ships were under way near Buoy No. 15 in the River Plate's Indio Channel, 40 miles south-west of Montevideo and nine miles off the Argentine coast.
