A modern ship contains scores of complex systems which control navigation, propulsion and cargo. Ship surveyor Colin Butler describes how these are installed and later tested and certified on sea trials. Shipbuilding is a curious and fascinating form of heavy industry. There is great variety of finished product and a ship is often built as an individual example or one of a short series. To translate the trading demands and commercial aspirations of the customer into a finished, floating article that will be profitable for both shipyard and shipowner is an immensely rewarding team effort.
