Chiquita charters containership

Us-based banana exporter Chiquita took an unusual step when they chartered a containership, the 1,368TEU Petkum, for a voyage from the Caribbean, rather than a reefer vessel. The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged 2008-built Petkum was chartered because Chiquita had an urgent need to ship extra containers, and each container can carry about 25 tonnes of bananas.rnWith about 625 container vessels idle, owners of available vessels have been pleased to take reefer cargoes. Banana operators were reported to be looking for ships with higher numbers of container refrigeration plugs and Petkum has capacity for 250 reefer containers. Chiquita chartered her for $4,500 a day for a trip to the USA.
