The Blue Funnel Line was the brainchild of Alfred Holt, who was convinced that the steamship would provide a better and more economical way of shipping cargo overseas. In this new book, Ian Collard tells the varied and interesting story of this Birkenhead-based shipping line. The book is divided into two main sections, the first of which describes the history of the company and how it developed, the text being accompanied by numerous illustrations. Holt commenced shipowning with Thomas Ainsworth in 1852 and they built their first new ship in 1854. In 1864 they began sailing to China and the Far East.
