86-year-old fireboat retired

One of the world's oldest operating fireboats, the Seattle Fire Department's 86-year-old Alki (pictured), has been put up for bid following its retirement on Lake Union. Originally powered by gasoline engines when competed as a rescue boat in 1927, Akli is currently propelled by twin Cleveland 500hp diesels giving a top speed of 13 knots, while six diesel-driven Byron Jackson pumps below deck give a water rate of 16,000 gpm at the monitors.
