The Secretary of State for Defence has announced the award of additional multi-million pound contracts in the UK and US for further development work and long-lead production of the UK's future nuclear deterrent. The latest investment is part of a five-year 'assessment phase' for the detailed design of a submarine which will replace the current Vanguard class from 2028 onwards. The first artist concept of how the so-called Successor class may look has been revealed, showing a heavilyraked, centrally-positioned sail and X-stern rudder configuration.
