During the course of the last seven years that has seen the global shipping industry pass through one of the worst recessions in living memory, India's largest private sector ship owner, Great Eastern Shipping, has regularly churned out annual reports that have not had recourse to the dreaded red ink. Indeed, there may have been a diminution of profit, year-on-year, but there has never been a loss in any of these seven years. And dividends have been consistently maintained at a satisfactory level, with the lowest payout in the last four years being 61 % in fiscal 2014-15. Even in 2008-09, which was the worst year for shipping in this millennium, a token dividend of 10% was paid out.
