Survey reveals need for seafarer HIV action

Despite all the work that has gone into educating seafarers about HIV/AIDS, many myths about its transmission still remain, according to a new survey released by the International Transport Workers' Federation. The staggering results include one labour supplying country where only 17% of respondents believed condoms are effective in preventing it and 46% believe it can be spread through food and drink. For the report, A broader vision of seafarer wellbeing: survey of ITF maritime affiliates on HIV/AIDS, health and wellbeing', the ITF questioned 34 trade unions and just over 600 seafarers.
